Betsy DeVos has a calm and polite public person. At the same time, her track record as a woman who will face her problems and fight for what she believes in is established. This was made obvious when she met with transgender members of her staff to inform them that President Trump would be rescinding a policy enacted by the Obama administration. The reversed policy allowed transgender students to use the bathroom that corresponded with the gender they identified as.
Despite being hired by Trump, she informed her staff that she actually opposed the move. While DeVos did not agree with the decision to end the policy, she didn’t make a strong effort to fight it. In the past, DeVos and her husband have both been known to oppose what they felt were Obama’s overreaching federal laws. Some are questioning whether she is a leader or someone who will just follow suit and be a team player in the Trump administration. Local residents of the state of Michigan understand that the Secretary is actually quite headstrong in her beliefs. It seems her public reputation and her personality behind closed doors are two different things. Members of the state government have noted that she showed very little fear when trying to influence the law in her favor, like when staunchly fighting for charter schools. This was true whether it came to using her personality or her family’s vast fortune. She has yet to exhibit this during her time as Secretary of the Department of Education.
To be fair, DeVos is still in the very early stages of her tenure as Education Secretary. It is reasonable to expect that she will grow into the role and become more comfortable expressing her opinions and using force to help guide policy.
DeVos was born and raised in Holland, Michigan as Betsy Prince. The Prince family is extremely wealthy and powerful in the region and raised all of their children in the Dutch-influenced Christian Reformed Church. Her religious and personal background allows for a deeper understanding of her views on religion.
She is married to Dick DeVos, who has run unsuccessfully for governor in the past. He is also a member of the family that founded the major mail-order retailer, Amway. The two billionaires fought hard for the voucher program that allows tax money to be used to send students to private and religious schools instead of their local public school. This is something that she is sure to bring to the table in the future while working for Donald Trump.
