From Apprentice to Executive: The Career Path of Karl Studer
Few career trajectories in the energy sector illustrate the power of hands-on learning quite like that of Karl Studer. Starting out as an apprentice lineman in 2000 with the Missouri Valley JATC program, he brought an uncommon combination of physical resolve and natural leadership instinct to every job site he encountered.
After completing his apprenticeship, Karl Studer enrolled at Northwest Lineman College in Meridian, Idaho. Instructors recognized something immediately in the young trainee: a restless curiosity about how things could be improved and a talent for reading the dynamics of a room. Before his program was even finished, he had been entrusted with responsibilities that extended far beyond those expected of a student, including oversight of crew safety, job efficiency, and client satisfaction.
This early credentialing opened doors. Karl Studer moved through field roles at Wasatch Electric, rising from Foreman to General Foreman to Superintendent between 2002 and 2007. The progression was deliberate rather than accidental. Each role demanded a broader view of operations, and he absorbed those lessons thoroughly, building the foundation for what would come next.
In 2007, he co-founded Probst Electric as Vice President, transforming a regional contractor into a multi-state transmission and infrastructure company. He simultaneously co-founded Summit Line Construction, adding another specialized firm to his portfolio. Both companies were acquired in 2013 by one of North America’s largest infrastructure contractors.
The subsequent decade brought escalating responsibility. As a student of leadership culture in the infrastructure industry, Karl Studer steadily expanded his scope, eventually assuming the role of President of Electric Power in 2022. For those familiar with where he started, the journey reads less like an exception and more like a blueprint for what is possible in the skilled trades.
